A Fine Romance is a British romantic comedy-drama television series produced by London Weekend Television for ITV, originally airing from 1981 to 1984. Created by Bob Larbey and John Esmonde, the series stars real-life husband and wife Judi Dench and Michael Williams as Laura Marriott and Phil Tolhurst. Laura is a successful landscape gardener whose practical and somewhat neurotic outlook on life keeps her emotionally guarded. Phil is a laid-back, somewhat cynical writer and journalist who struggles with commitment and the realities of middle age. The premise of the show explores the slow-burning, cautious relationship that develops between Laura and Phil after they are brought together by their respective siblings, who are married to each other. As they navigate everyday awkwardness, misunderstandings, and the pressure of societal expectations regarding romance later in life, their bond deepens. The series is celebrated for its sharp dialogue, gentle humor, and the genuine chemistry between Dench and Williams, making it a classic of British television comedy-drama.
