All in the Family

All in the Family is a groundbreaking American sitcom that aired on CBS from 1971 to 1979. The series centers on the life of Archie Bunker, a working-class bigot living in Queens, New York, and his interactions with his family. The show famously broke the mold of television comedy by tackling controversial social and political issues—such as racism, antisemitism, infidelity, homosexuality, women's liberation, rape, religion, and the Vietnam War—that had previously been considered unsuitable for a sitcom. The central conflict often arises from the clash between Archie's conservative, often prejudiced views and the progressive, liberal values of his son-in-law, Michael 'Meathead' Stivic. Caught in the middle are Archie's long-suffering but kind-hearted wife, Edith, and their daughter, Gloria. By using satire to expose the absurdity of bigotry, the show became a cultural phenomenon, consistently ranking as the most-watched program in the United States for five consecutive seasons.
