Alternatywy 4

Alternatywy 4 is a cult classic Polish satirical comedy television series directed by Stanisław Bareja. Set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the plot revolves around the tenants moving into a newly built apartment building located at 4 Alternatywy Street in Ursynów, Warsaw. The series brilliantly and humorously exposes the absurdities, corruption, inefficiency, and everyday struggles of life under the communist regime in Poland. The building is managed by the tyrannical, zealous, and self-important house manager Stanisław Anioł, whose ideological schemes and absurd regulations make the lives of the residents miserable. The tenants form a diverse cross-section of Polish society—including intellectuals, workers, scammers, and party members—who must constantly navigate housing shortages, bureaucratic red tape, and the constant scarcity of everyday goods. Through sharp satire and brilliant caricatures, the show provides a timeless critique of totalitarian bureaucracy.
