American Experience: Into the Deep - America, Whaling & the World

Premiering as part of the acclaimed PBS documentary series 'American Experience', 'Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World' explores the complex and often brutal history of the American whaling industry. The film chronicles how whaling transformed small New England port towns like Nantucket and New Bedford into economic powerhouses, fueling the nation's Industrial Revolution with oil while simultaneously projecting American economic and cultural influence across the globe. Through archival imagery, expert historians, and the dramatic words of those who lived it, the documentary uncovers the human cost of the dangerous voyages, the near-extinction of majestic marine mammals, and the complex legacies of the diverse crews—including Native Americans and African Americans—who sailed on these historic ships.
