American Fiction

American Fiction is a satirical comedy-drama that follows Thelonious 'Monk' Ellison, a frustrated novelist and academic who is tired of the establishment profiting from 'Black' entertainment that relies on offensive tropes. To prove a point, Monk writes an outlandish, stereotypical 'Black' book under a pseudonym, only for the novel to become a massive critical and commercial success, forcing him to dive deeper into the hypocrisy he claims to despise. As his literary hoax spirals out of control, Monk must navigate the absurdity of the publishing industry while simultaneously dealing with his own fractured family life. The film explores themes of identity, artistic integrity, and the commodification of Black culture, balancing sharp, biting social commentary with deeply personal moments of grief and reconciliation.
