Au service de la France

Set in 1960s Paris, the series follows André Merlaux, a young and naive recruit who joins the French Secret Service. As he navigates the bureaucratic maze of the intelligence agency, he is mentored by three seasoned, eccentric, and often incompetent agents who are more concerned with maintaining French prestige and navigating office politics than actual espionage. The show serves as a satirical look at the Cold War era, highlighting the absurdity of institutional power and the clash between traditional French values and the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape. Throughout the series, Merlaux must balance his professional duties with his personal life, including a complicated romance with the daughter of his superior. The narrative masterfully blends deadpan humor with historical references, portraying the French intelligence apparatus as a dysfunctional family unit. As the agents attempt to handle international crises, their efforts are frequently undermined by their own prejudices, obsession with protocol, and the sheer incompetence of their superiors, resulting in a witty and biting critique of bureaucracy.
