Set primarily in Prohibition-era America, Baccano! tells a non-linear story involving several seemingly unrelated groups—including alchemists seeking immortality, mafia syndicates, ambitious thieves, and ordinary people—whose lives intersect aboard the transcontinental train, the Flying Pussyfoot. As blood spills and chaos ensues across multiple timelines in 1930, 1931, and 1932, the true nature of an elixir granting eternal life is revealed, connecting the chaotic fates of all involved. The narrative is famously told from multiple perspectives without a single definitive protagonist, shifting back and forth through time to weave a tapestry of dark comedy, brutal violence, and jazz-infused style. Characters like the lovable yet eccentric duo Isaac Dian and Miria Harvent, the ruthless immortal Ennis, and the psychotic hitman Ladd Russo drive a relentless plot full of shifting alliances, mistaken identities, and supernatural revelations.
