Set in a picturesque yet notoriously eccentric fictional rural village in County Wicklow, Ireland, Ballykissangel follows the arrival of Father Peter Clifford, a young English-born Catholic priest. Transferred from a bustling urban environment, Father Clifford must navigate the quirky, tight-knit, and deeply traditional local community, where he immediately clashes with the town's powerful, self-appointed boss and pub owner, Brian Quigley. Over the course of its run, the series explores themes of faith, community, romance, and cultural clash. The central relationship between Father Clifford and local independent businesswoman Assumpta Fitzgerald forms the emotional core of the drama, defined by a simmering, unspoken attraction. As the series progresses, it transitions through the departures and arrivals of various lead characters, examining the evolving dynamics of rural Irish life against the backdrop of modernization.
