Set against the gritty backdrop of 1980s New York City, Banana Fish centers on Ash Lynx, a seventeen-year-old gang leader with lethal combat prowess, extraordinary intellect, and a traumatic past. Groomed from a young age by the powerful Corsican mafia boss Dino Golzine, Ash seeks autonomy while trying to unravel a mysterious conspiracy tied to the cryptic phrase 'Banana Fish'—the only words his older brother Griffin has repeatedly muttered since returning comatose from the Iraq War. Ash's precarious life becomes further entangled when he crosses paths with Eiji Okumura, a gentle young Japanese photojournalist assistant who has traveled to America to cover street gangs. Despite coming from entirely different worlds, an unspoken, profound bond rapidly develops between them. When Golzine's syndicate and rival factions recognize Eiji as Ash's emotional vulnerability, both young men are thrust into a high-stakes underworld conflict involving government cover-ups, bioweapons, and organized crime syndicates vying for control over the mind-altering drug known as Banana Fish. As the conspiracy escalates, Ash fights ruthlessly to protect Eiji and secure his own freedom from the ghosts of his past. The series explores themes of trauma, redemption, corruption, and the tragic price of liberty, cementing itself as an intense and emotionally devastating crime thriller.
