Bernard and Doris is a biographical drama that explores the complex, unconventional relationship between the eccentric tobacco heiress Doris Duke and her Irish butler, Bernard Lafferty. Set against the backdrop of high society, the film chronicles their meeting in the late 1980s and the subsequent years they spent together, navigating personal demons, substance abuse, and the scrutiny of the public eye. As the narrative unfolds, the power dynamic between the two shifts from a traditional employer-employee arrangement to a deep, platonic intimacy. Bernard, a recovering alcoholic, becomes Doris's most trusted confidant and caretaker, while Doris finds in him a genuine connection that her wealth and social status had previously denied her. The film examines the themes of loyalty, loneliness, and the blurred lines between service and companionship in the final years of Duke's life.
