Set six years before the events of Breaking Bad, the series follows Jimmy McGill, a struggling public defender and former con artist trying to establish himself as a legitimate lawyer in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jimmy works out of the back room of a nail salon, caring for his brilliant but mentally ill older brother, Chuck McGill, who suffers from electromagnetic hypersensitivity. As Jimmy navigates the legal system, he finds himself constantly tempted by his past life as 'Slippin' Jimmy,' leading him into morally ambiguous territory. The first season chronicles Jimmy's transformation as he attempts to build a reputation through a high-stakes class-action lawsuit against a nursing home chain. Along the way, he crosses paths with Mike Ehrmantraut, a former Philadelphia police officer working as a parking lot attendant, whose own dark past and pragmatic approach to crime begin to intersect with Jimmy's legal maneuvers. The season explores the complex sibling dynamic between Jimmy and Chuck, highlighting the professional jealousy and ethical conflicts that eventually pave the way for Jimmy's evolution into the flamboyant criminal lawyer Saul Goodman.
