Set in Britain's Regency era (roughly late 18th to early 19th century), 'Blackadder the Third' follows Mr. Edmund Blackadder, who has sunk down the social hierarchy to serve as butler to the imbecilic, vain, and foppish George, the Prince Regent. Highly cynical, sharply intelligent, and thoroughly disillusioned with his lot in life, Blackadder spends his days attempting to fleece his dim-witted employer of his vast fortune, advance his own social standing, and outmaneuver historical forces. Assisting—and constantly frustrating—Edmund is Baldrick, his filthy and dim dogsbody, who resides in the palace drains and perpetually hatches absurd 'cunning plans.' Together, they navigate a rotating cast of historical absurdities, ranging from corrupt rotten borough elections and the revolutionary threat from across the Channel, to duels with the Duke of Wellington and the pompous pedantry of Dr. Samuel Johnson and his newly completed English dictionary. Regarded as one of the finest series in British television history, 'Blackadder the Third' combines biting satire, quick-witted repartee, and peerless comedic timing. Writers Richard Curtis and Ben Elton lean into historical satire while cementing the dynamic trio of Atkinson, Laurie, and Robinson as one of television's greatest comedy ensembles.
