Boss Coffee Commercials (Suntory)

Suntory's 'Boss Coffee' commercials are a legendary series of Japanese television advertisements that have aired since 1992. The campaign is best known for its long-running 'Alien Jones' narrative, featuring a cynical, observant extraterrestrial sent to Earth to study humanity. Portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones, the alien takes on various blue-collar jobs—from construction worker to taxi driver—to better understand the complexities, struggles, and small joys of the human experience, always concluding that Earth is a 'strange planet' while enjoying a can of Boss Coffee. Beyond the Alien Jones arc, the commercials are celebrated for their high production value, cinematic storytelling, and frequent collaborations with major Japanese celebrities and international stars. The series has become a cultural phenomenon in Japan, blending humor, social commentary, and a deep sense of empathy for the working class. By positioning the coffee as a companion for the weary laborer, the commercials have transcended traditional advertising to become a beloved anthology of short-form character dramas.
