Set during World War II, the series follows Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier stationed in Italy. Yossarian is deeply frustrated by the bureaucracy of the military and the arbitrary nature of the war, specifically the ever-increasing number of missions he is required to fly before he can return home. He desperately seeks to be grounded, but his attempts are thwarted by the titular 'Catch-22,' a bureaucratic paradox that dictates that a soldier who is considered insane is not fit to fly, but requesting to be grounded due to fear of death is proof of a rational mind, therefore making him fit to fly. As Yossarian navigates the absurdity of his situation, he encounters a cast of eccentric officers and fellow soldiers, each dealing with the horrors and monotony of war in their own dysfunctional ways. The series explores themes of existential dread, the dehumanizing nature of military hierarchy, and the dark humor inherent in a system that values protocol over human life. It is a faithful adaptation of Joseph Heller's seminal novel, capturing the surreal and tragic atmosphere of the Italian front.
