Charles in Charge follows the life of Charles, a college student who takes a job as a live-in babysitter for the Pembroke family in New Jersey. As he balances his studies, his social life, and his responsibilities to the three Pembroke children—Lila, Douglas, and Jason—Charles often finds himself in humorous situations that require him to act as a mentor, mediator, and surrogate older brother. The series explores the dynamics of a non-traditional household and the growing pains of adolescence. Following its initial run on CBS, the show was revived in syndication with a shift in focus. Charles moves in with the Powell family, taking on similar responsibilities while navigating new friendships and romantic interests. Throughout its run, the show became a staple of 1980s sitcom television, defined by its lighthearted tone, the chemistry between Charles and his best friend Buddy Lembeck, and the evolving challenges of the families he serves.
