In the early hours of April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic suffered a catastrophic explosion and fire, releasing massive amounts of radioactive fallout across Europe. The critically acclaimed historical drama miniseries dramatizes the unprecedented disaster, exploring the harrowing stories of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to mitigate a worse catastrophe, as well as the systemic institutional failures, secrecy, and lies that allowed the tragedy to happen. At the center of the narrative are Valery Legasov, a prominent Soviet nuclear physicist appointed to the government commission investigating the accident, and Boris Shcherbina, the Soviet Deputy Prime Minister tasked with leading the government commission during the crisis. Alongside Ulana Khomyuk, a fictionalized nuclear physicist determined to uncover the true cause of the disaster to prevent future accidents, they navigate political interference, bureaucratic apathy, and lethal radiation doses in a race against time to contain the invisible enemy.
