Chez Maupassant is a French anthology television series that adapts the brilliant short stories of 19th-century author Guy de Maupassant. Each standalone episode delves into the complex, often cynical, and deeply human aspects of French society, exploring themes of ambition, hypocrisy, greed, love, and tragedy. Through lush period settings and meticulous direction, the series brings to life the stark realism and psychological depth characteristic of Maupassant's literary masterpieces. The episodes feature an array of distinctive characters navigating the rigid social structures of the Belle Époque and rural France. From desperate civil servants chasing status to tragic figures ruined by their own vanity, the narratives capture the bittersweet ironies of human existence. The anthology serves as both a cinematic tribute to classic French literature and a gripping character study of nineteenth-century life.
