China Beach

Set during the Vietnam War, China Beach focuses on the lives of the nurses, doctors, and soldiers stationed at the 510th Evacuation Hospital and the nearby R&R facility in Da Nang. The series centers on First Lieutenant Colleen McMurphy, an idealistic Army nurse who struggles to maintain her humanity and sanity amidst the constant influx of wounded soldiers and the moral complexities of the conflict. Unlike many war dramas of its time, the show prioritizes the psychological toll of the war on those behind the front lines, exploring themes of trauma, loss, and the enduring bonds formed under fire. As the series progresses, it follows the characters through their tours of duty and their eventual, often difficult, transitions back to civilian life in the United States. The narrative frequently utilizes a non-linear structure, jumping between the harrowing experiences in Vietnam and the long-term aftermath for the survivors. Through its ensemble cast, including soldiers, entertainers, and medical staff, China Beach provides a poignant, gritty, and deeply emotional look at the Vietnam War era, earning critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of the human cost of war.
