In sixth-century China, the powerful Chiyan Army and the Crown Prince of the Great Liang dynasty are framed for high treason and brutally massacred on the order of a paranoid Emperor. Lin Shu, the nineteen-year-old prodigy and son of the Chiyan commander, barely survives the treacherous purge in the freezing flames of Plum Ridge. Left with a frail body and an altered appearance after enduring the excruciating cure for the Poison of the Bitter Flame, he transforms himself into Mei Changsu, the elusive chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance and the foremost scholar in the pugilistic world. Twelve years later, Mei Changsu returns to the imperial capital of Jinling under the guise of an enigmatic strategist seeking political refuge. Secretly driven by an unwavering vow to vindicate his fallen brothers-in-arms and clear the name of the wrongly executed Crown Prince Qi, he inserts himself into the fierce war of succession between the ruthless Crown Prince Gao and the ambitious Prince Yu. Rather than backing either frontrunner, Mei Changsu secretly pledges his allegiance to his childhood companion, the unyielding and principled yet unfavored Prince Jing. Navigating treacherous imperial court intrigues, intricate power balances, and dangerous political traps, Mei Changsu orchestrates brilliant gambits to dismantle the corrupt ministries piece by piece. As time rapidly runs out on his precarious health, he must keep his true identity hidden from both foes and loved ones while striving to restore justice to history and guide Liang toward a righteous future.
