Set in the year 2977 in the sprawling, neon-drenched metropolis of Oedo, Cyber City Blues (originally released as Cyber City Oedo 808) follows three hardened criminals who are offered a chance at freedom. Sengoku, Gogul, and Benten are serving centuries-long prison sentences when they are recruited by the Oedo police force to form a special cyber-crimes unit. In exchange for their service, their sentences are reduced for every mission they successfully complete, though they are kept on a short leash by explosive collars that will detonate if they attempt to escape or fail to follow orders. As they navigate the dangerous underbelly of a futuristic society, the trio must confront rogue AI, corporate conspiracies, and lethal cybernetic threats. Each episode focuses on the unique skills and personal demons of the three protagonists, highlighting the moral ambiguity of their situation. Forced to act as law enforcement in a city that views them as expendable, they struggle to maintain their humanity while fighting against the very system that holds them captive.
