Death in Paradise is a popular British-French crime drama series set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie. The series follows a succession of British detectives—typically fish-out-of-water characters—who are sent from the London Metropolitan Police to lead the local police force. Despite the idyllic tropical setting, the detectives must navigate complex murder mysteries, often involving locked-room puzzles and eccentric suspects, while adjusting to the laid-back pace of island life and the unique cultural dynamics of their local team. The show is renowned for its lighthearted tone, clever 'whodunit' structure, and the recurring trope of the detective gathering all suspects in a room to reveal the killer. Over the years, the series has maintained a consistent format while evolving through the changing personalities of its lead inspectors, ranging from the uptight DI Richard Poole to the more relaxed DI Humphrey Goodman and DI Neville Parker. The show balances procedural investigation with character-driven humor and the stunning backdrop of the Caribbean.
