Doomwatch is a British science fiction television series created by Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis, broadcast on BBC One between 1970 and 1972. The series follows a fictional government agency, the Department for the Measurement of Scientific Work (known as Doomwatch), led by the visionary and often abrasive Dr. Spencer Quist. Tasked with investigating the dangerous side-effects of scientific and technological advancements, the team confronts ecological disasters, rogue genetic experiments, technological overreach, and unethical corporate practices that threaten humanity. Throughout its run, the series tackled pressing contemporary environmental and ethical concerns well ahead of their time, including pollution, genetic mutation, overpopulation, and the misuse of biochemical technology. Dr. Quist, alongside dedicated colleagues like John Ridge and Colin Bradley, frequently clashed with bureaucratic government officials and corporate interests who prioritized progress and profit over public safety and environmental preservation.
