Set in Regency-era England, the series follows Emma Woodhouse, a young woman described as "handsome, clever, and rich" who is thoroughly convinced of her own matchmaking skills. Spurning any thoughts of romance and marriage for herself, Emma happily meddles in the romantic lives of those around her, often misinterpreting the feelings of others and creating comedic and emotional complications. As her well-intentioned but misguided interventions lead to unintended heartaches—particularly concerning her protégé Harriet Smith and the mysterious Frank Churchill—Emma is forced to confront her own flaws and snobbery. Throughout her journey of self-discovery, she must navigate the critical eye of her neighbor George Knightley, whose steadfast guidance ultimately helps her realize that love has been right in front of her all along.
