Set in the Joseon Dynasty, the story follows King Lee Heon, who has been unable to move on from the death of his beloved crown princess seven years prior. As a result, he has issued a 'geumhonryeong' (marriage ban) decree, forbidding all single women in the kingdom from marrying until the King finds a new queen. The kingdom is in chaos due to the decree, and the people are desperate for it to end. Enter So Rang, a clever con artist who runs a tea shop and claims to be possessed by the spirit of the late crown princess. When she is caught and brought before the King, she improvises a lie to save her life, pretending to be possessed by the spirit of the King's deceased wife. This leads to an unlikely alliance and a series of comedic and romantic entanglements as So Rang navigates the dangerous royal court while helping the King heal from his past trauma.
