Free! follows the story of Haruka Nanase, a boy who has always loved to be immersed in water and swim. During elementary school, Haruka and his three friends—Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka—participated in a relay race and won. After the race, they went their separate ways, with Rin moving abroad to pursue his dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer. Years later, the boys reunite in high school, but they find that Rin has changed significantly, harboring a deep-seated rivalry and resentment toward his former teammates. To bridge the gap and rediscover their passion for the sport, Haruka, Makoto, and Nagisa form the Iwatobi High School Swim Club, eventually recruiting a new member, Rei Ryugazaki. As they train for upcoming competitions, the series explores themes of friendship, the pressure of expectations, and the emotional growth of the characters as they navigate their relationships with each other and their shared love for swimming.
