Giri/Haji: Echoes

Set between the sprawling neon underworld of Tokyo and the gritty rain-swept streets of London, Giri/Haji follows Kenzo Mori, a principled detective with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. When the nephew of a prominent Yakuza boss is murdered in London using a ceremonial sword belonging to Kenzo's estranged and presumed-dead brother Yuto, Tokyo teeters on the brink of an all-out gang war. To prevent catastrophic bloodshed, Kenzo is secretly dispatched to the United Kingdom by his superiors to track down Yuto and bring him to justice. Upon arriving in London, Kenzo finds himself navigating a completely foreign and hostile environment. His search pulls him into the orbit of Sarah Weitzmann, a suspended Met Police detective lecturing in criminology, and Rodney Yamaguchi, a charismatic, half-Japanese, half-British sex worker wrestling with addiction and grief. As Kenzo delves deeper into London's criminal web, he discovers that Yuto has become an enforcer for an ambitious British crime boss, orchestrating moves that threaten the delicate balance between international syndicates. As loyalties fracture and hidden betrayals surface on both sides of the globe, Kenzo is caught in the crosshairs of duty (giri) to his family and the overwhelming weight of personal and cultural shame (haji). The investigation forces each character to confront their deepest regrets, culminating in an emotionally charged clash across cultural boundaries.
