Good Times is a groundbreaking American sitcom that aired on CBS from 1974 to 1979. Created by Eric Monte and Mike Evans, and developed by Norman Lear, the series follows the Evans family—Florida, James, and their three children, J.J., Thelma, and Michael—as they struggle to survive in the Cabrini-Green housing projects of Chicago. The show is celebrated for its realistic portrayal of working-class life, addressing serious social issues such as poverty, unemployment, and systemic racism through a comedic lens. Central to the show's legacy is the dynamic between the family members, particularly the eldest son, J.J. Evans, whose catchphrase "Dy-no-mite!" became a cultural phenomenon. While the series often leaned into slapstick humor, it remained grounded in the parents' unwavering efforts to keep their family together despite the harsh realities of their environment. It remains a landmark in television history for being one of the first sitcoms to feature a Black nuclear family, paving the way for future representations of African American life on screen.
