Gotham serves as an origin story for the iconic DC Comics characters, focusing on the early days of Detective James Gordon as he navigates the corrupt and crime-ridden streets of Gotham City. Following the tragic murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, the series explores the rise of the city's most notorious villains, including the Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, and the Joker, while tracking the transformation of young Bruce Wayne from a traumatized orphan into the Dark Knight. As Gordon partners with the cynical Harvey Bullock, he struggles to maintain his moral compass in a police department riddled with systemic corruption. The narrative weaves together the complex power struggles of the city's criminal underworld, the political machinations of the Wayne Enterprises board, and the psychological evolution of the city's future protectors and adversaries, ultimately chronicling the descent and eventual rebirth of Gotham.
