Set in the late Joseon Dynasty during a period of intense political upheaval and modernization, Jejoongwon follows the dramatic journey of Hwang Seok-hee, a low-born butcher's son who overcomes deep-rooted class prejudices to become one of Korea's first Western-trained doctors. Entering the newly established Jejoongwon hospital—the country's first modern medical institution—he trains alongside ambitious peers under foreign missionaries, facing ethical dilemmas, cultural resistance, and the turbulent backdrop of the Korean Empire's final years. Alongside Seok-hee's inspiring medical journey, the series weaves a compelling tale of ambition, societal transformation, and romance, featuring characters like Baek Seok-hyun, a brilliant physician from a yangban background, and Yoo Seok-ran, an interpreter's daughter who defies gender norms to pursue medicine herself. Together, they navigate the shifting tides of history, personal rivalry, and the ultimate humanitarian calling to save lives regardless of social status.
