Set in a world during the industrial revolution where a mysterious virus emerges, transforming infected humans into aggressive, undead creatures known as 'Kabane.' These monsters are nearly impossible to kill, as their hearts are protected by a layer of iron. To survive, humanity has built fortified stations connected by armored trains called Hayajiro, which serve as the only means of travel and defense against the encroaching hordes. The story follows Ikoma, a young engineer who develops a weapon capable of piercing the Kabane's heart. During an attack, he is bitten but manages to prevent the virus from reaching his brain, transforming him into a 'Kabaneri'—a hybrid being with human intelligence and Kabane strength. Alongside Mumei, a mysterious girl who is also a Kabaneri, Ikoma boards the armored train Koutetsujou to fight for survival and uncover the truth behind the apocalypse.
