Kamakura-dono no 13-nin

The 13 Lords of the Shogun is the 61st NHK Taiga drama, chronicling the rise of the Kamakura Shogunate through the eyes of Hojo Yoshitoki. Set in the late 12th century, the story begins with the exile of Minamoto no Yoritomo and the subsequent rebellion against the Taira clan. As the political landscape shifts, Yoshitoki evolves from a naive young man into a ruthless political strategist navigating the treacherous waters of the nascent military government. The series focuses on the power vacuum left after Yoritomo's sudden death, leading to the formation of a council of thirteen retainers. This group, intended to provide collective governance, instead becomes a hotbed of betrayal, assassination, and internal conflict. Yoshitoki must manipulate his allies and enemies alike to secure the Hojo clan's dominance, ultimately redefining the nature of power in medieval Japan.
