Set in an alternate, historically divergent version of Edo-period Japan, Katanagatari follows Shichika Yasuri, the seventh head of the Kyotoryu school of martial arts—a unique fighting style where the user's own body acts as a blade. Living in isolated exile on an island with his sister Nanami, Shichika's quiet life is upended by the arrival of Togame, an ambitious and eccentric shogunate strategist. Togame enlists Shichika's help to collect the twelve Deviant Blades, legendary and dangerous swords crafted by the master smith Shikizaki Kiki. Throughout their journey across Japan, Shichika and Togame face formidable wielders of each unique sword, each weapon possessing bizarre and supernatural properties that force Shichika to adapt his martial arts beyond mere physical strength. Along the way, their professional partnership evolves into a deep emotional bond, though looming political conspiracies, tragic personal histories, and the true, sinister purpose behind Shikizaki Kiki's master plan threaten to consume them both in a story defined by its distinct dialogue-heavy narrative and striking visual style.
