Set in the late 19th century, the series chronicles the lives of the residents of two neighboring English communities: the small, impoverished hamlet of Lark Rise and the wealthier, bustling market town of Candleford. The story is told through the eyes of Laura Timmins, a young woman who leaves her humble home in Lark Rise to work at the post office in Candleford under the guidance of her sophisticated cousin, Dorcas Lane. As Laura navigates the social divide between the two worlds, the series explores themes of class, community, and personal growth. The narrative weaves together the daily struggles, romances, and triumphs of the villagers, highlighting the stark contrast between the traditional, agrarian lifestyle of the hamlet and the modernizing, commercial influence of the town. Through its rich character studies, the show captures a vanishing way of life in Victorian England.
