Longitude is a historical drama based on Dava Sobel's best-selling book, chronicling the parallel stories of two men separated by two centuries. In the 18th century, John Harrison, a self-taught English clockmaker, battles the scientific establishment and the British Admiralty to prove that his revolutionary marine chronometer can solve the problem of determining longitude at sea, a feat deemed impossible by the greatest minds of the era. In the 20th century, Rupert Gould, a retired naval officer, discovers Harrison's long-neglected and broken timepieces in the basement of the Royal Observatory. Obsessed with the history of the clocks, Gould embarks on a painstaking mission to restore them to their former glory, mirroring Harrison's own struggle for recognition against a backdrop of personal sacrifice and institutional indifference.
