Set in the years leading up to the First World War, the series follows Richard Herncastle, a young man who leaves his quiet life in the provinces to join his uncle, the charismatic and eccentric magician Nick Ollanton, in the vibrant world of the British music hall. As Richard travels across England with the troupe, he is thrust into a world of glamour, backstage rivalries, and complex personal relationships, all while the shadow of the Great War looms over the Edwardian era. As Richard matures, he becomes entangled in the lives of the performers, including the beautiful and enigmatic Julie Becquet. The series captures the transition from the innocence of the pre-war period to the harsh realities of a changing world, exploring themes of ambition, lost love, and the ephemeral nature of fame. It serves as a poignant character study set against the backdrop of a vanishing theatrical tradition.
