Made in Abyss follows the journey of Riko, an orphaned girl living in the town of Orth, which sits on the edge of a colossal, mysterious chasm known as the Abyss. The Abyss is filled with relics of a lost civilization and dangerous creatures, and it is the dream of every 'Cave Raider' to descend into its depths. When Riko discovers a robot boy named Reg who has no memory of his past, she decides to descend into the Abyss to find her missing mother, Lyza the Annihilator, despite the deadly 'Curse of the Abyss' that makes returning from deeper levels increasingly difficult and lethal. As the duo travels deeper, they encounter increasingly bizarre ecosystems and moral dilemmas that challenge their innocence. The series is renowned for its stark contrast between its whimsical, Ghibli-esque art style and its harrowing, dark fantasy themes. Along the way, they meet allies and adversaries who reveal the tragic history of the Abyss, forcing Riko and Reg to confront the brutal reality of their quest and the heavy price of uncovering the world's deepest secrets.
