Mito Komon is a long-running and iconic Japanese jidaigeki (period drama) that follows the fictionalized travels of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the retired lord of the Mito Domain. Accompanied by his two faithful retainers, Sasaki Sukesaburo and Atsukuni渥美格之進 (Suke-san and Kaku-san), Mitsukuni travels incognito across Japan under the guise of a retired chirimen wholesaler named Mitsuemon. Throughout their journey, the trio witnesses firsthand the corruption, oppression, and injustices inflicted upon commoners by greedy local officials, corrupt merchants, and ruthless samurai lords. To combat this, Mitsukuni reveals his true identity at the climax of each story by displaying the inro (medicine case) bearing the Tokugawa clan crest, prompting the wrongdoers to immediately submit to justice and repent for their sins.
