Set during the Qing Dynasty, the story follows Xia Ziwei, a young woman who travels to Beijing to find her father, the Qianlong Emperor, carrying a token of her mother's love. After befriending the street-smart and mischievous orphan Xiao Yanzi, Ziwei entrusts her with the token to help her gain an audience with the Emperor. However, a series of chaotic misunderstandings leads the Emperor to mistake the boisterous Xiao Yanzi for his long-lost daughter, granting her the title of 'Huan Zhu Ge Ge' (The Return Pearl Princess). As Xiao Yanzi struggles to maintain her facade within the rigid and dangerous confines of the Imperial Palace, she and Ziwei—who eventually enters the palace as a maid—must navigate the treacherous schemes of the Empress and other court rivals. Along with their loyal companions, including the Emperor's son and a brave swordsman, the two women embark on a journey of romance, friendship, and self-discovery, constantly risking their lives to protect their secrets and their newfound bonds.
