Pardon the Expression

Pardon the Expression is an American sitcom that served as a spin-off of The Red Skelton Hour, focusing on the exasperating life of middle-aged department store manager Willoughby S. Cleaver. Constantly stressed by his demanding boss, Mr. Murdock, and the daily chaos of running the store's ready-to-wear department, Cleaver tries to maintain his dignity while frequently getting himself into embarrassing domestic and professional pickles. Alongside his loyal yet sharp-tongued wife, Elaine, Cleaver navigates the suburban comedies and workplace frustrations of 1960s America. The series highlights the classic sitcom tropes of misunderstandings, scheme-heavy plotting by its well-meaning protagonist, and the warm domestic resolution characteristic of the era. Though short-lived compared to its parent show, it showcased the physical comedy and timing of its lead actor to great effect, capturing the anxieties of post-war corporate and suburban life.
