Set in 1920s Harlem during the height of the Harlem Renaissance, 'Passing' follows the unexpected reunion of two childhood friends, Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry. Both women are Black, but Clare has chosen to 'pass' as white, living a married life with a racist wealthy white man who knows nothing of her true heritage. As Clare inserts herself back into Irene's comfortable middle-class life, she becomes increasingly enamored with the Black culture and community she abandoned. The psychological tension mounts as Clare's obsession with her former life threatens to expose her secret, while simultaneously stirring up complex feelings of envy, desire, and anxiety in Irene. The precarious balance of their concealed identities unravels, leading to a tragic and ambiguous climax that explores themes of racial identity, social class, gender roles, and the psychological cost of assimilation.
