Qawwali and Beyond

"Qawwali and Beyond" is an immersive musical documentary drama series that explores the rich, mystical history and the contemporary evolution of Qawwali, the devotional Sufi music of the Indian subcontinent. The series follows a young, aspiring Qawwal from Lahore named Daniyal, who struggles to preserve his family's centuries-old musical lineage while navigating the modern pressures of commercialized fusion music. Alongside Daniyal's personal journey of artistic discovery, the show features deep historical vignettes, shedding light on the legendary figures of Qawwali who used poetry and rhythm to bridge the divine and the human. As Daniyal prepares for an international festival in Istanbul, he faces deep-seated conflicts with traditional elders who view modern arrangements as heresy, even as he finds unexpected mentorship from a reclusive master teacher. Through breathtaking performances, backstage drama, and historical reenactments, "Qawwali and Beyond" delves into themes of spiritual surrender, cultural identity, and the universal power of music to transcend geopolitical divides.
