Respond 1997

Set in the late 1990s, Reply 1997 follows the lives of six friends living in Busan as they navigate the turbulent transition from high school to adulthood. The story centers on Sung Shi-won, a die-hard fan of the boy band H.O.T., and her childhood friend Yoon Yoon-jae, who has harbored secret feelings for her since they were children. The series masterfully shifts between the characters' high school days in 1997 and their reunion at a high school dinner in 2012, where a marriage announcement is made, keeping the audience guessing about the identity of the groom. Beyond the central romance, the drama serves as a nostalgic love letter to the K-pop fandom culture of the 90s, exploring the intense dedication of 'fangirls' and the generational clashes that defined the era. Through its witty dialogue, realistic portrayal of adolescent angst, and the evolving dynamics of the group, the series captures the essence of first loves, family bonds, and the bittersweet passage of time, ultimately becoming a landmark production that launched the highly successful 'Reply' anthology series.
