Rumpole of the Bailey

Rumpole of the Bailey follows the professional and personal life of Horace Rumpole, an aging, cynical, and eccentric barrister practicing at the Old Bailey in London. Known for his rumpled suits, love of cheap cigars, and penchant for quoting poetry, Rumpole specializes in defending clients whom others consider guilty, often clashing with the more ambitious, status-seeking members of his chambers. He is a man out of time, clinging to the principles of the British legal system while navigating the changing social landscape of the late 20th century. Beyond the courtroom, the series explores Rumpole's complicated marriage to his formidable wife, Hilda—whom he affectionately refers to as 'She Who Must Be Obeyed'—and his strained relationships with his colleagues at 4 Equity Court. The show masterfully balances sharp legal drama with dry, satirical wit, highlighting Rumpole's unwavering commitment to the presumption of innocence and his refusal to bow to the pressures of the legal establishment.
