Rust is a Western film project that became the subject of intense global scrutiny following a fatal on-set shooting incident in October 2021. The film follows Harland Rust, an aging outlaw who comes out of hiding to save his estranged 13-year-old grandson, Lucas, who has been sentenced to hang for an accidental killing. Together, the two fugitives must outrun the legendary U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and bounty hunter Fenton 'Preacher' Lang, who are tracking them across the Kansas territory. The production gained international notoriety when a live round was discharged from a prop gun held by lead actor Alec Baldwin, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the injury of director Joel Souza. The incident sparked a massive investigation into set safety protocols, labor practices, and criminal liability within the film industry, leading to a prolonged hiatus and subsequent legal battles that fundamentally altered the film's trajectory and public perception.
