Set during the Joseon Dynasty, Sangdo tells the epic life story of Im Sang-ok, a historical figure who rose from a humble merchant to become the wealthiest and most respected trader in the country. The series chronicles his journey as he navigates the cutthroat world of commerce, political intrigue, and social hierarchy, all while adhering to his strict moral code of honesty and integrity. Unlike his greedy contemporaries, Sang-ok believes that the true essence of business is not just profit, but the cultivation of human relationships and the betterment of society. As he faces numerous trials, including betrayal, imprisonment, and the constant threat of powerful rivals, Sang-ok transforms from a simple clerk into a legendary merchant prince. The drama explores themes of ambition, ethics, and the philosophy of 'Sangdo'—the way of the merchant—which emphasizes that wealth should be used to serve the people rather than to exploit them. Through his wisdom and resilience, he eventually earns the favor of the King and leaves an indelible mark on Korean history.
