Smiley's People

Following the events of 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy', retired British intelligence officer George Smiley is called out of retirement by the Circus after the brutal murder of an aging Soviet émigré and former asset, General Vladimir, on Hampstead Heath. Though Whitehall bureaucrats wish to quickly bury the incident to avert a political scandal, Smiley begins an unofficial inquiry into the last days of his old friend, discovering tantalizing clues that Vladimir had uncovered crucial, explosive intelligence regarding Karla, the enigmatic head of Moscow Centre and Smiley's career-long nemesis. Retracing the dead general's footsteps across Europe, Smiley pieces together a fragile web of clues spanning Paris, Hamburg, and Bern. He encounters an array of forgotten spies, defectors, and fragile pawns caught in the Cold War crossfire, gradually unearthing Karla's clandestine and personal vulnerability: a mentally fragile daughter hidden away under a false identity in a Swiss sanatorium, financed illegally using Soviet state funds. Smiley must decide whether to weaponize this secret to achieve the ultimate prize. As the operation reaches its climax, Smiley orchestrates Karla's defection across the Berlin Wall. The victory, however, comes at an immense psychological and moral cost, forcing Smiley to confront the reality that he has used the same ruthless and inhuman methods as his adversary, blurring the moral divide between East and West in the twilight of the Cold War.
