In the year 2199, Earth is on the brink of extinction after being bombarded by radioactive meteor bombs from the alien Gamilas Empire. The planet's surface has become uninhabitable, forcing the remnants of humanity to live in underground cities. With only one year left before the radiation renders the Earth completely lifeless, a mysterious message from the planet Iscandar offers the technology for a Cosmo Cleaner D, a device capable of reversing the radiation damage. To retrieve this technology, the United Nations Cosmo Force refits the sunken remains of the World War II battleship Yamato with advanced propulsion and weaponry. A crew of brave volunteers, led by Captain Juzo Okita and the hot-headed pilot Susumu Kodai, embarks on a perilous 148,000-light-year journey to Iscandar. Along the way, they must battle the relentless Gamilas fleet and overcome internal strife, all while racing against time to save their home world.
