Set in the early 14th century, the series follows Wilkin Brattle, a battle-weary knight in King Edward I's army who lays down his sword after being ravaged by the horrors of war. Seeking a life of peace, he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all when violence finds him again, leading him to assume the identity of a journeyman executioner in a small Welsh village. As Wilkin navigates his new, dark profession, he becomes embroiled in a complex web of political intrigue, religious tension, and rebellion against the oppressive rule of the English nobility. Haunted by his past and struggling with his newfound role, he must balance his desire for redemption with the brutal necessity of survival in a world defined by vengeance and shifting loyalties.
