The Beiderbecke Affair

The Beiderbecke Affair is a British television comedy-drama series written by Alan Plater. The story follows Trevor Chaplin and Jill Swinburne, two mild-mannered, jazz-loving teachers living in Leeds. Their quiet lives are turned upside down when they become accidentally entangled in a complex web of political corruption, local government scandals, and international espionage after a series of seemingly trivial misunderstandings involving a jazz record and a missing person. As the duo attempts to navigate the increasingly dangerous situation, they are pursued by both inept local authorities and more sinister figures. The series is celebrated for its witty dialogue, dry humor, and the chemistry between its leads, serving as a satirical look at 1980s British society while maintaining the tension of a classic thriller. It is the first installment in the Beiderbecke Trilogy, followed by The Beiderbecke Tapes and The Beiderbecke Connection.
