Set in an alternate late 15th-century England, the series reimagines British history following the Battle of Bosworth Field, where King Richard III wins the battle but is inadvertently slain by his sniveling, cowardly nephew, Prince Edmund. Crowned under his imposing father, King Richard IV, the hapless and neurotic Edmund dubs himself 'The Black Adder' and constantly schemes with the help of his dim-witted henchmen—the slovenly dung-gatherer Baldrick and the foolish Lord Percy Percy—to secure power, prestige, and ultimately the crown. Unlike later incarnations where Edmund becomes a suave and razor-sharp cynic, this inaugural entry portrays him as anxious, clumsy, and desperate, navigating bizarre medieval trials, witch hunts, archbishop assassinations, and arranged royal marriages. The historical satire plays freely with Shakespearean tropes, medieval superstition, and court intrigue. Created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson, the series laid the foundation for one of British television's greatest historical sitcom dynasties. Marked by sweeping location filming, grand cinematic production values, and sharp wit, it began an enduring comedic saga spanning centuries of British absurdity.
